How to Hardwood Flooring Care and Maintenance

Caring for and maintaining your solid and engineered hardwood floor is an essential element in ensuring that your new hardwood flooring stays as rich and vibrant as the day it was installed. Like any major investment, it is important to understand the risks involved in order to protect it. There are simple precautions you can take to guarantee that your hardwood will endure the test of time, and building an understanding of these preventive measures is the key to keeping your hardwood looking like new.

Although hardwood flooring is susceptible to environment related damage and degradation, hardwood is a wonderfully resilient and durable material and will keep its colour, sheen and physical constancy if the factors mentioned below are considered.

·         Common household cleaners and other floor care products can damage and alter the consistency of hardwood flooring finish.

The primary concern for new solid hardwood flooring owners should be moisture and humidity. Maintaining constant ambient relative humidity is the key element to ensuring your hardwood floor does not expand and contract unnaturally due to seasonal environmental changes. Hardwood flooring performs and maintains its natural properties in environments with humidity percentages between 30% and 45%. A suitable temperature range for hardwood flooring is found between 60° and 80° Fahrenheit, with the ideal medium being approximately 70°.

A common misconception regarding hardwood flooring maintenance is the use of water as a cleaning agent. Although most common household spills and blemishes will be water-based, The Hardwood Flooring Center does not recommend using water to remove imperfections, nor do we advise that you wet or damp-mop your floor when cleaning is needed. Damp-mopping or any other use of water or household cleaner on hardwood may cause inconsistency in the finish and swelling in the hardwood itself. The use of a soft-bristled horsehair broom to clear away surface dust and dirt is the ideal method of particulate removal, followed by a spray treatment of hardwood-specific cleaner, wiped thoroughly with a microfiber cloth or cleaning pad.
